It was tough to decide on a rating for this book. The first hundred pages or so were, if I'm honest, a little difficult to get through. It's a first novel and you can almost feel the author finding his voice. Not to say there isn't plenty of good stuff - great characters, interesting settings, a growing sense of dread - but it's a little rough and I seriously wondered if it was all going to come together in the end. Mutliple storylines, a little horror, a little thriller, a little prison drama - where the hell was this all going? At that point I was thinking 3 stars - something I liked, but wasn't going to want to read again.Man, am I glad I kept reading. From about the halfway mark on the pace increases steadily to the point where you can almost hear the engine of the plot screaming (along with several characters). It took me a couple of weeks to read the first 100 pages or so, but I finished the last half in a day. I could not wait to find out what was going to happen to these people I had become so invested in. Suddenly it became a 4 star book for me, 'cause I know I'll read it again.
Finishing the book I was immediately disappointed, as I often am at the end of a good read, that the ride was over.
How lucky am I that the sequel (One Million Dead) just came out today, then?
So, give it a shot - the ride is totally worth it.

The Well of Trees edition by Scott Cram Bob Cram Jr Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
Great book I enjoyed it from the beging to the end it was a cool new twist on how the whole walking dead zombie appocalyps all starts which they never show you in the movies or the tv series.
This book will keep you guessing right up until the end. I'd classify it as more suspense than horror, but I prefer that too so I was happy the story unfolded the way it did. This story is complicated and creative, and brings a broad range of characters and cultures together in a way that is both clever and intriguing. It's a good start for a new author, and shows potential in many ways. I look forward to his next book.
To say that this is a good read would be an understatement. You don't read this book, you experience it. In "The Well of Trees" Scott Cram manages to weave several seemingly seperate threads into a magnificent tapestry with the expertise of a skilled artisan. I, as the reader, could visualize each and every character with such clarity that I felt they were sitting down beside me. I saw the sights, I smelled the smells, and I felt the pain. This novel begins as a brisk jog, but quickly turns to a run and before long you find yourself willingly sprinting toward its exciting conclusion. You must pick up this book.
If you're looking for a book that seems to automatically turn the pages for you, "The Well of Tress" is the one! Starting out in the jungles of the and spreading all the way down to the streets of Little Havana, and up to Manhattan and the "Island of the Dead", Scott tells the story of several individuals who's lives all come together with the force of one unprecedented storm.
You find yourself torn by the thought of what you yourself would do to save the life of someone you love. Would you risk the lives of hundreds, thousands, or even millions? In this book, the answer is yes, and I simply couldn't put it down. In a clever way, Scott has us rooting for the bad guys almost as much as the good guys, just to see why it is they are the way they are. What do they have planned? Who are they really?
I read it when I cooked, cleaned, and drove. I woke up in the middle of the night and read. Without giving any spoilers, all I can say with conviction is that you're in for a wild read that leads you down dark dilapidated prison passageways and through the decaying mind of its inhabitants as well as its guards. Every character is deliciously flawd and perfectly rounded. Read it, you won't be disappointed!
A great twisted tale of the apocalypse. Scott Cram has a very intersting view that is both imaginative and spellbinding... Definately one to read during the wee hours of the night!
This was a fantastic read. From the moment I picked it up, I found it very hard to put back down. Scott starts a zombie outbreak in this book of a different kind; one not very often heard about. The book is well written, fun to read, and has a great array of characters, drawing people from all walks of life in his novel. One character in particular Hacim, in particular is wonderfully written, and I assure you that you will like his story as well. If you read this novel you will not be disappointed. Great job Scott!
I have a confession to make.
Halfway through this book, when the author was still introducing characters, I started to lose faith that everything would come together in the end in a satisfactory conclusion.
I shouldn't have worried, Scott Cram does a great job of weaving the multi-cultural threads of narrative into a tapestry of rotting flesh and unfulfilled promises. I don't feel like I'm giving anything away in telling you that no one makes it through this tale unscathed. Everyone is realistically depicted, everything feels...right.
Very well done, I look forward to reading more from this author!
